Christmas Letter 2007

Christmas 2007

To All,

This year we learned the importance of family as a source of support at times of great sorrow. On July 9, my sister Tricia’s husband Ken died of heart failure at age 64. Although he had been ill for some time, his passing was still a shock to all of us and he will be truly missed. Bill, Joe, Mary, Kathy and I traveled to Oakley, Calif., for the services. Betty paid a visit in October. As you gather and share the Christmas Holidays with each other, keep Tricia and her daughter Erin in your prayers as they observe their first Christmas without him.

The Schield family gathered in October, but for a joyous occasion, to mark the 90th birthday of family patriarch Carroll Schield (Nov. 21) and the 65th wedding anniversary of he and Betty Schield (Oct. 17). The setting was Captiva Island off the coast of Florida. David Schield writes: “We rented a house on the island that provided an opportunity for shared cooking duties that resulted in some fabulous meals, cocktail hour on the beach at sunset, great camaraderie and general family chatter.”

65 years married,

with bride Betty.

Aunt Betty was treated for back problems at a rehab center for a few weeks in the fall but is now back at the assisted living center where she and Carroll reside in Florida. David continues building his graphic design business while wife Rebecca heads the Private Client Group for the Eastern US at US Bank. Their oldest daughter Jessica, 23, graduated in May from UW-Stout and is moving to Denver to be assistant manager of a restaurant there. Son Jeff, 21, continues at Western Illinois University majoring in Exercise Science. Their youngest, Grace, 15 and a high school sophomore, is scheduled to play in a soccer tournament in Arizona next February.
Erin Freer started this fall at Simpson University in Redding, Calif. Tricia accompanied Erin and a number of her classmates on a trip to England in early July, including Erin’s barefoot walk across Abbey Road, mimicking the famous Beatles album cover!

Maureen Gesley, 20, is spending her third year at UW-Madison studying in Ecuador!

Bill is currently a tech writer at Fox Studios in Los Angeles, though he’s NOT one of those writers on strike. He wrote a feature article for Brentwood Magazine on different vodkas…after exhaustive research!
Betty moved to a new job at Habush Habush and Rottier, one of the largest law firms in Wisconsin, after many years as a paralegal at another firm. But because Habush prohibits personal use of company e-mail Betty, for the first time in her life, bought a home computer! She has several siblings offering moral as well as technical support!
Mary’s sister-in-law Peggy Van Pelt died in June of cancer in San Diego. Husband Bill is on sabbatical from UW-Milwaukee and their daughter Lizzie, turned 15 on Dec. 2.
I continue covering the technology industry in Silicon Valley, though currently as a freelancer having been laid off from a reporting job at Network World magazine in November. But not before covering a Microsoft event in San Francisco at which I shook hands with Bill Gates!
Joe moved to a new job at Robert’s, a bar/restaurant known to many Mullinses and Jonases on Milwaukee’s south side.
From the Jonases comes news that Mary Pat and David Groth’s son, Jeremy, is to attend medical school at UW-Madison. Also, Sarah’s restaurant in Bay View, Café LuLu, was voted one of Milwaukee’s best sandwich shops in a poll on WISN.com, the Web site of the TV station http://wisn.cityvoter.com/details.aspx?business=26638 . Tom and Sandy’s son Connor, turns 16 Dec. 26 and takes his road test the next day!

Brian McCorry and his wife, Betsy, spent a week in Sicily and Italy this summer. Their oldest son Patrick returned to San Francisco after a year working for his employer, Google http://www.google.com, in Dublin. Son David bought a business in Durango, Colo., where he lives with wife Lisa and their three children. Daughter Lizzie works for a nonprofit in Chicago and sees the nuns occasionally; Sr. A is walking again after being laid up for almost a year. Andrew is a sophomore at Notre Dame and plans to study abroad next year. Their youngest, Matthew, has started at Indiana University.
Dan and Robin McCorry’s son Gavin, is engaged to be married in July after having graduated from the Air Force Academy. Devin and Chelsea still live at home but Chelsea is researching colleges to attend.
Maureen and Brian have arranged for their mom, Mary Ann McCorry, to be with both their families over the Christmas holidays, spending Christmas Eve at the home of Maureen Drabik and her family in Woodbridge, Ill., and then being driven Christmas Day to South Bend, Ind., for Christmas with Brian’s family. Let’s hope the weather cooperates! Mary Ann doesn’t let a wheelchair slow down her appetite for continuing education. She now subscribes to a series of lectures that she views on DVDs on subjects such as history and Shakespeare.
We all show our age as the years go by. I came across a YouTube video of me covering a press conference on the steps of the Federal Courthouse in San Francisco, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyw97QDDN_I with my receding hairline there for all to see. I went with my brother Bill to the Los Angeles Auto Show. I used to judge cars based on how cool, stylish or sporty they look. Now I judge them by how easy or hard it is to climb out of them. Lamborghini? Porsche? Sorry, can’t get out of them. Taurus? Escape? Chrysler minivan? No problem! ;)
It’s good to know, however, that as the aches and pains accumulate, so does the love and kindness of relatives and friends who step up to provide support when needed and without pause.
Here’s wishing you all good health, good fortune, the love of family and the joy of the Christmas Season this year.

God Bless,

Robert Mullins
